When you hear the word ‘superfood’, you might think not think about desserts – but maybe you should. There are many superfoods that are in season during the fall, and some of them just happen to be great for healthy dessert choices.
Here are a few ideas to help get you started:
Sweet Potato Cupcakes
This is an excellent idea if you want to make cupcakes with some spice, but increase the health at the same time. They are not necessarily low in fat and calories, but with sweet potatoes as a main ingredient, you are getting a wonderful fall superfood that is really good for you. ‘
You can also do these same types of cupcakes with pureed pumpkin if you prefer. Make your favorite cupcake recipe by adding mashed sweet potatoes, such as one with fall spices like ground cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Using light brown sugar instead of white sugar can also help to lighten up the cupcakes.
Gingerbread Chocolate Chip Cookies
If you are looking to have a baked treat in the fall, but want to keep it on the healthier side, then these gingerbread cookies are perfect. They use all clean ingredients, but you can sweeten them more by adding some dark chocolate chips.
You can use your own gingerbread recipe, but choose healthy ingredients like organic molasses, coconut sugar instead of regular sugar, coconut flour, and coconut oil. Add in some almond butter instead of regular butter, then add spices like ginger and cinnamon.
Pumpkin Spice Truffles
Believe it or not, you can still enjoy your favorite truffles when you want to eat healthier, and use some superfoods at the same time. Pumpkin is the perfect superfood when you are making fall treats because it reminds you of the season, and is much healthier than people realize.
For pumpkin spice truffles, use pumpkin puree and sweeten them with seed butter and maple syrup. You can thicken them up with a little protein powder of any flavor you like, and add in some coconut flour as well.
Spiced and Fruity Jam
Would you like to make some healthy jam this fall? You definitely can with a few superfoods and all natural ingredients. Choose some fall fruits like apples, pears, and cranberries, and make your jam with natural sweeteners like maple syrup. Add in your spices, such as cinnamon and nutmeg, and additional superfoods such as chia seeds.
